在英帝国南部非洲殖民地艰难谋生的白人后裔迪克,为了摆脱穷困处境及流散情结而不断抗争,试图重构自我。然而,在异质文化碰撞与融合过程中,他无法平衡冲突,身份认同危机四伏:白人身份逐渐疏离、农场主身份日益迷失、男权身份逐步模糊。在异质文化冲突与融合中的迪克找不到自己的文化母体,而身份疆界的模糊使他无论身处何方,都位于边缘的位置,变成了一个无可皈依的精神"流亡者"。

Dick,a white descendant,is trying his best to earn his living in the colonial southern Africa of British Empire.In order to get rid of poverty and diaspora complex,Dick incessantly attempts to reconstruct a new self.While during the process of mutual collision and harmony of different culture,he can't balance conflicts,which leads to his identity crisis: the weakening of his white-descendant's identity,the losing of his slave-farmer's identity,and the dimming of his representative identity for the male.Invovled in conflicts and integration of different culture,Dick fails to find his own culture,and on account of his vague identity he always stays at the edge of society wherever he is.Therefore,he comes to be a spiritual "exile"missing his way home.
